STEPtember 24

In memory of Bernie...

Hi gang!

In memory of my late brother, Bernie and to support a great cause, I've thrown my hat in the ring to do 10,000 steps/day for 30 days.

I've never counted steps nor worn a pestometer before - so, it should be a real hoot!  :-)  The campaign is known as Steptember and my aim is to raise $500 for the Cerebal Palsy Alliance.

So, if you've got $10 or $20 burning a hole in your pocket and you want to support a great cause, there's a donation window to the right!

[ PS:  If you see me sporting a walking cane in early October, you'll understand why... :-) ]

Done and dusted!

Thursday 26th Sep
So, Sydney wasn't all hammocks and armchairs like I thought it might be.

On Friday we trudged all over Bicentennial Park on what my daughter, Olivia, falsely described as a picnic.  Racked up over 15k.  Travel days (on Thursday and Tuesday) also came in around 20k roaming around Tullamarine and Sydney airport.  Also - not having a vehicle - ended up walking to the supermarket, the local church, KFC (to replenish the calories I was loosing) and the local Aquatic Centre.

Lost a lot or calories due to sheer terror on Saturday when we went to https://treetopsadventure.com.au/.
"We have easy, medium, hard and very hard, Mr Ryan."
Meh - they always overstate these things - "I'll start with medium."
After completing "medium" (and a quick change of underwear), I chose "easy" and then retired early.  Turns out being 59 is not quite the same as being 29.  :-)

The buffer is dwindling...

Monday 23rd Sep
From 4.5 days ahead to 2.5 days ahead.  Been on leave since 5pm Thursday.  On my 4th day of a five day break in Sydney annoying my elder offspring (hey, there has to be some benefits to this Elon Musk inspired, reproduction policy, right?).  I'm on easy street until Monday 30th - the end of the challenge - should be right; only need to average 6.5k steps per day from here on in.

Fatigue sets in

Monday 16th Sep
By the stats, everything is going well.  As of end-of-day, yesterday, I'm just under 195,000 steps - 45,000 steps or 4.5 days ahead of par.  But to do that, I had to put in a big day Wednesday (19.5k) and Saturday (18.5k) and go for a 70 minute walk on Sunday (13k) - the day I'm trying to budget such that I can literally "put my feet up".

Its surprising how relatively easy it is to do 10k steps for 3 or 5 days - but like everything else; trying to stick to it day in; day out for 30 days is relatively hard.

Looking forward to the weeks leave at the end of the month!

What a week!

Monday 9th Sep
Well, made it (just) to the end of the first week.  As of yesterday, I've logged just over 90,000 steps which is 10,000 ahead of "par" for that day.

Have to get a bit ahead as I'm taking a weeks leave at the end of September and don't imagine I'll be logging as much.

Pro tip (that everybody else probably already knows :-) For a given distance, you do about 30% more steps if you walk rather than run.

Fitbit for Father's day

Monday 9th Sep
Well, the family got me off to a flying start by buying me a Fitbit 5 for Father's Day.  Took me until 2 or 3pm to figure out how to get it going consequently logged 992 steps on my first day!  Whooot!

"Things..... can only get bettteerrrrr; can only get betterrr"

Why STEPtember is important to me

Every 20 hours, an Australian child is diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

I'm STEPing up this September to fundraise to support Cerebral Palsy Alliance in their mission to help people with cerebral palsy live their best lives.

STEPtember participants are passionate about being healthy, building a more inclusive world and making a life-changing impact for people with cerebral palsy.

Will you STEP up with me for cerebral palsy?
