WHAT IS CEREBRAL PALSY

Cerebral palsy (CP) is an umbrella term that refers to a group of disorders affecting a person’s movement and posture, and is the most common physical disability in childhood.

Cerebral palsy results from damage to the developing brain, either during pregnancy or shortly after birth. It's a permanent life-long condition, but generally does not worsen over time.

Cerebral meaning ‘of the brain’ and palsy referring to ‘a lack of muscle control’ affects body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture and balance. People who have cerebral palsy may also have visual, learning, hearing, speech, epilepsy and intellectual impairments.

Cerebral palsy is the most common physical disability in childhood.

1 in 700 Australian babies is diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
34000 people have cerebral palsy in Australia.
17 million people have cerebral palsy worldwide.

TYPES OF CEREBRAL PALSY

Cerebral palsy (CP) manifests in various forms, affecting individuals uniquely:

1. SPASTIC CP

The most common form of cerebral palsy characterised by muscles that feel stiff and tight.

2. DYSKINETIC CP

Characterised by involuntary movements that are out of a person's control.

3. ATAXIC CP

Characterised by shaky movements, affects balance and sense of positioning in space.

4. MIXED CP

Some individuals experience a combination of forms, symptom types and causes.

HOW CEREBRAL PALSY AFFECTS THE BODY

Cerebral palsy can affect different parts of the body in various ways:

1. HEMIPLEGIA

One side of the body (one arm and one leg) is affected.

2. DIPLEGIA

Both legs are affected. The arms may be affected to a lesser extent.

3. QUADRIPLEGIA

Both arms and legs are affected, and often the torso and face.
